All of Broadway's marquees will dim to honor the life of Gavin Creel following an outcry by theater fans when only a partial dimming was proposed after the 48-year-old Tony Award-winner's death last month. The Committee of Theatre Owners announced that all 41 Broadway theaters will dim their lights on separate nights for Creel, Adrian Bailey, and Maggie Smith. Additionally, the committee stated that they are currently reviewing their dimming policy and procedures.
The death of Gavin Creel on September 30 brought attention to the practice of dimming marquee lights after a notable theater figure passes away. While prominent figures typically receive a full dimming of all Broadway theaters, lesser-known individuals may only have partial dimming.
In response to the public outcry, the Committee of Theatre Owners decided that one theater from each theater owner would dim their lights in honor of Creel. An online petition demanding full participation from all theaters garnered over 23,000 signatures. Actors' Equity, representing numerous performers and stage managers, expressed their concern, emphasizing that every individual deserving of a tribute should receive the full honor. Playwright Paula Vogel criticized the partial dimming as a disservice to Creel, highlighting his contributions to the industry.
Gavin Creel was a seasoned Broadway musical theater performer, having won a Tony Award for his role in “Hello, Dolly!” alongside Bette Midler. He also received nominations for his performances in “Hair” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
Partial dimming has been previously implemented for theater producer Elizabeth Ireland McCann and Marin Mazzie. However, the decision regarding Mazzie was reversed to a full dimming following a similar public outcry.
The date for the dimming tribute for Gavin Creel and Maggie Smith is yet to be announced, while the tribute for Adrian Bailey, known for his appearances in 15 Broadway productions, is scheduled for October 17.
