New York Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen couldn’t believe Philadelphia Phillies slugger Whit Merrifield got away from a possible strike in the top of the ninth on Monday night.
During the game where New York led by a run, Philly had two outs, and Merrifield had a strike when he check-swung at a pitch that probably should’ve been called another strike.
However, the umpire called it a ball, which gave Merrifield extra life and helped take the game to 10 innings for an eventual Phillies victory.
While it’s fair to argue whether this should’ve been a strike or not, Cohen clearly believed Merrifield and the Phillies should’ve been checked for the strike instead of given an added lifeline to get the win.

Calling strikes and balls is always tricky for an umpire in the MLB, but this one really seems like it should’ve gone New York’s way, at least Cohen and Mets fans think so.
For Philly, you’re just glad Merrifield didn’t strike out on this one.
