Brits travel hundreds of miles to buy sports drink for £20 from off-licence

Shoppers are travelling hundreds of miles to snap up a sold out sports drink at a humble off-licence.

Wakefield Wines has become a viral internet hit after stocking the cult hydration drink Prime.

The store sells bottles for £19.99 - ten times its usual retail price.

And the team behind Prime have warned buyers they are being "ripped off".

But desperate youngsters and parents are flocking to the store to get their hands on the product after it became a playground hit.

The drink is sold by Asda but quickly flies off the shelves.

And videos of happy customers at the off-licence, known as ‘Wakey Wines’ have been viewed millions of times.

Wagon driver Darren Grieves travelled 130 miles this week from Carlisle with his three children to buy two bottles of the blue raspberry flavour and one of the lemon lime.

He laughed: “I’ve never done anything like this before.”

And added: “It’s not worth it.”

Abdul Jabbar, who has worked in the shop in Wakefield, West Yorks, for seven years, said dozens of youngsters queue outside at weekends.

“They get excited when they’re here, sometimes shouting, others playing music” he said.

Shop owner Azar Nazir, 40, said earlier this month: “I sell up to 30 bottles a day. Parents are buying them for Christmas presents.”

The creators of Prime, YouTube stars KSI,29, and Logan Paul, 27, have used their social media following to create huge demand for the drink, which contains coconut water, sweeteners and vitamins.

But KSI reacted in horror after seeing a TikTok video of a youngster buying six bottles in Wakey Wines for £145.

He said customers were being “ripped off” and added: “Do not pay that much for Prime.

“I know people want prime OK, just wait or camp out Asda nice and early, get in Asda nice and early and pay £2, OK, £2 for prime.”
