Brits baffled to discover foreign washing machines have chocolate and wine buttons

You'd be forgiven for assuming that all washing machines have near-identical functions - no matter the design, make or age.

Sure, some shinier up-market models have fancier settings, but for the most part we're all used to the likes of quick wash, eco, cotton and wool options on the front of our appliances.

But it turns out that people living in other countries have a far better deal on their washing machine functions, as Brits have recently discovered.

Cleaning fans have been left dazzled after learning that foreign washing machines often include clever additional settings to tackle everything from spilt wine to chocolate stains.

Writer Joe Barton left people bamboozled after he shared an image of a so-called 'Mediterranean' washing machine.

Joe - who boasts more than 18,000 followers on Twitter account @JoeBarton_, captioned the post: "Very much enjoying that this Mediterranean washing machine has special settings for if you spill tomatoes, wine or olive oil on yourself."

The appliance offers up the normal settings, but it also boasts additional options - from "tomato" to "vino", labelled with fitting pictures of the fruit and a glass of wine.

Since posting on Monday 1 June, his tweet has racked in over 4,500 retweets and has been viewed over 2.8 million times, as social media users are floored by the crafty design.

One person wrote: "I need one of those!"

"Technology is amazing," a second said.

A third pleaded: "This should be available for purchase worldwide."

Even TV star chef Nigella Lawson jumped in on the trend, writing: "True."

Someone else said: "My Dutch washing machine has settings for chocolate, grass, and earth & sand. Stains are different region by region in Europe!"

"Is there a UK version for Marmite, baked beans, Branston (wartime) pickle?" Another joked.

While Brits were admittedly intrigued by the additional settings, others claim it's simply standard practice in other countries.

Someone claimed: "Have one of those for some years now and never thought of it as something unusual! Just a regular washing machine in Portugal."
