'Britney was broken and I've been holding her hand through new single', says Elton John

Sir Elton John has opened up on how his highly anticipated collaboration with Britney Spears came about and revealed he's excited at how much confidence the tune can give the star.

The tune titled Hold Me Closer was released today (Friday) and is the Toxic singer's first new tune in six years. And music icon Elton, 75, admits she "sang fantastically".

He admitted the idea to collaborate with Britney, 40, was first mentioned by his husband David Furnish. Elton said he has always been an admirer of the songstress so was immediately keen on the idea to help her get her career back on track after her conservatorship came to an end last year.

Brit had claimed she was retired from music in the aftermath, but speaking to The Guardian, Elton admitted he was "excited" at the collaboration. He told the publication how they had to make sure she was happy with the tune being released and got her approval.

He said: "She’s been away so long – there’s a lot of fear there because she’s been betrayed so many times and she hasn’t really been in the public eye officially for so long. We’ve been holding her hand through the whole process, reassuring her that everything’s gonna be alright."

He continued: "I’m so excited to be able to do it with her because if it is a big hit, and I think it may be, it will give her so much more confidence than she’s got already and she will realise that people actually love her and care for her and want her to be happy. That’s all anybody in their right mind would want after she went through such a traumatic time."

Elton went on to say Britney was "broken" and candidly discussed how he had previously felt the same way, saying he was in a "terrible place". Thankfully, he gushed he is now the happiest he has ever been following his 32 years of sobriety.

And he believes it's from his past experiences that he is able to advise other stars and help them out of any dark places they're in. Previously, he has also helped huge names in the industry with their personal and professional issues. He's been there for stars such as Robbie Williams, George Michael and Geri Horner and says he's motived by the memories of his own struggles.

The release of the album comes at a time Britney once again deactivated her Instagram page. She told her followers on Twitter she is enjoying a "clean slate" everyday and is doing what makes her happy and hopes to become as "fearless" as she was in her younger years.
