A witness told local media: "I came by and saw that something was happening. His friend anxiously told me what had happened and I immediately jumped up and put the top of his sweatpants under his head.
"He wasn't moving and was breathing very hard, so I poured a little water on him and pressed his chest several times. Then he started to breathe easier, he regained consciousness, but he was moaning in severe pain.
"I measured his pulse, it was 43 beats per minute, I remember exactly... I turned him on his side, the left side of his face and chin were bloody from the cut, and the right side of his hand was swollen.
"Then the ambulance arrived. very quickly, and then they brought him into the car. They intubated him and immediately took him to the helicopter."
"We are taking measures and actions under the jurisdiction of the police in order to determine all the facts and circumstances of the event," Split police said last night.
Last month, a British dad-of-two died just hours after excitedly calling his family during his first holiday abroad in Spain.
Dion, who was holidaying with his girlfriend Leanne, was said to be over the moon about his first holiday in the European country, having missed out on a trip there a year prior because his passport didn't arrive in time.
Less than 24 hours before his tragic death, he had spoken to his dad to share "how wonderfully warm it was".
Before the end of the day, Dion had fallen from a balcony and died as a result of his injuries.
In the days since his friends have paid tribute to an "absolutely sound and amazing bloke".
His cousin Naomi has set up a fundraiser to help repatriate his body and to support his devastated partner Leanne.
The GoFundMe reads: "The family have since discovered that, due to an oversight, there wasn't any travel insurance in place. This means that bringing Dion home has been made extremely difficult.
"Dion had settled into a wonderful life with Leanne and her two girls and loved spending as much time as he could with his two adorable children.
"They had some great times on their visits and are really going to miss their Dad."
