MMA fighter turned boxer Jack McGann has raced through the rankings and could soon find himself challenging for the British super welterweight title.
McGann was scheduled to appear at a Neilson promoted event on July 1st, but the plan to have the Liverpudlian headline the event fell through. Despite this, McGann has a wealth of options ahead of him.
With many routes to explore, negotiations and timings didn’t line up - ultimately leading to McGann not fighting at York Hall, London.
Even if the Scouser had featured, his IBO European championship wouldn’t have been on the line, and it would have been a ‘little run-out.’ With so many bigger options on the horizon, it made sense for McGann to bide his time.

The fight game can be frustrating with so many variables, but as one door closes, another opens. Very familiar with the business, McGann understands this. He said: “I’m in a good place but it is frustrating with all the moving parts. But once I’m over this messy spell, I imagine it’ll be more straightforward and all fall into place.”
An eliminator contest between McGann and Lee Cutler was previously approved, however, negotiations have halted with Cutler’s team reportedly opting to go in another direction.
Josh Kelly is the current British super welterweight title holder, and he is scheduled to face Gabriel Alberto Corzo for the WBO international super welterweight belt. Depending on the result, many are speculating Kelly will relinquish the British title, to turn his focus to the World rankings. This could see McGann lined up to fight for the vacant belt. Or if Kelly chooses to continue defending the title, Warren Boxing team would certainly look into making that bout.
The undefeated boxer has exploded into the sport and has his eyes set on achieving his goals. McGann said: “It all leads to the British now for me, that’s why I’m chasing the eliminators. He (Josh Kelly) is fighting on the 15th and what he chooses to do after is up to him, but the British title is my aim.”
Another option for ‘The Pilgrim’ could arise after Sion Yaxley defeated Kieran Gething via a decision for the IBO continental super welterweight title. The Liverpudlian could turn his attention to the IBO rankings in a fight against Yaxley with his IBO European title on the line.
McGann said: “I’ve done plenty of rounds with Sion Yaxley and after watching the fight, there could be something there where I defend my IBO European. There’s so many options out there for me, and I’m very close to making the next step in my career, all the changes at the moment are frustrating but I’m in a good spot.
“Like I’ve always said, the super welterweight division is the most stacked, you could pull any of the names out of a hat and make a good fight, so there are loads of options.”
With many variables still to be played out, time will only tell what the future holds for McGann. But it is lining up to be an exciting second half of the year for the super welterweight.
