British Soap Award fans 'in tears' over tribute to Neighbours

The British Soap Awards brought viewers to tears tonight as it paid a special tribute to Australian soap Neighbours.

The long-running show produced stars like Margot Robbie, Kylie and Russel Watson but was sadly axed after 37 years. Production was ceased in June leaving many viewers absolutely gutted that they could no longer watch the show that they grew up with.

At the time, the programme's official Twitter account sent out a statement. It said: "We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June."

They continued: “Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show. To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”

During the award ceremony tonight, host Phillip Schofield announced that filming wrapped for the last ever episode of Neighbour's yesterday. He said: "We couldn't let the most famous street in the southern hemisphere go without one last trip down memory lane."

They cut to a selection of clips from the soap as the theme tune played in the background. It seemed to break viewer's hearts as they shared their sadness on Twitter.

Clair said: "Balling at the @neighbours Montage!! #BritishSoapAwards." Stephen said: "The #Neighbours tribute has absolutely broken me. One of the best of the best of soap operas, and it’ll be one of biggest losses to the TV landscape we’ll ever see. A true telly icon and institutions that should’ve run forever. #SoapAwards."

Suzie said: "Aww really sad about #Neighbours ending. I wouldn't have missed an episode when I was growing up. Not gonna lie I'm a wee bit tearful here. #SoapAwards." Char said: "No my eyes are leaking. The fact I’ve literally grew up with neighbours and now it’s just ending? It’s horrible it should be axed #soapawards."
