British skier found dead by patrol after 'heavy fall' in French Alps

An investigation has been launched after a British skier died following a "heavy fall" at a resort in the French Alps, according to local reports.

Paramedics were scrambled to the scene after the man, 30, was fatally injured on the slopes in Serre Chevalier.

He was treated in hospital but died on Monday last week, France's BFMTV reported.

The accident happened in the La Salle-les-Alpes area of the slopes.

BFMTV said the skier was "in a state of brain death" and taken to the Grenoble University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The head of the ski resort Patrick Arnaud said: "The victim was discovered by a patroller who immediately raised the alarm.

"Joined by several other trackers, they provided first aid. All the ski area teams are affected by this tragedy and all our thoughts are with the family," Le Dauphine reports

Marion Lozac’hmeur, public prosecutor of the Hautes-Alpes department of Gap, confirmed an investigation into the incident was underway.

She said: "A judicial investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the accident. It is entrusted to the CRS Alpes."

A spokesperson from the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in France and are in contact with the local authorities."

The incident comes after another British tourist died from a heart attack at a ski resort in the French Alps.

The 63-year-old collapsed at the popular resort of La Plagne in the valley of the Tarentaise.

A French police spokesman told The Sun: "Emergency workers were at the scene extremely quickly, but the man could not be revived.

"He was declared dead by the Modane mountain aid station."
