British man dies after 'losing consciousness' while swimming at Costa Blanca beach

A British man has died during a dip in the sea at a Costa Blanca beach.

The 74-year-old is said to have lost consciousness while he was in the water at a beach next to Moraira Castle called La Ampolla Beach.

Lifeguards brought him onto the sand and tried to revive him before paramedics reached the scene and continued to practice CPR.

But they were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drama on the family-friendly beach, Moraira’s main beach just over a 30-minute drive north of Benidorm, happened around 2pm on Friday.

Details of the tragedy have only just emerged.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the dead man was on holiday or lives in the area.

A routine investigation is underway. The results of the post-mortem, thought to have been carried out over the weekend, have not been made public.

Similar scenes played out on another Costa Blanca beach in October last year when a 40-year-old Brit died while swimming along the Spanish coastline.

Fishermen spotted him floating in the water and got him to the shore, according to local reports.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at around 5.30pm and rushed to his aid to give him CPR.

But sadly they were unable to save the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
