British joy at Indian Wells as Andy Murray makes history and Emma Raducanu bounces back

There was joy for British tennis at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday as Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu secured historic wins.

The three-time Grand Slam champion came from a set down to defeat Japan’s Taro Daniel 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 and win his 700th match in the process.

The 34-year-old was brushed aside in the first set, which concluded in just 28 minutes.

Murray then stepped up his aggression in the second set and levelled the match, but began the decider on the back foot when he lost his serve.

The former world number one regrouped, levelled at 3-3 with a brilliant forehand and broke Daniel at 5-4 up to seal victory.

"It means a lot," an elated Murray told BBC Sport about reaching the historic landmark of match wins.

"I didn't have goals like that, even four or five years ago, but obviously after what's happened these last few years these are like small milestones.

"At the end of last year my goal was to try and reach 800 match wins, but first things first, let's try and get to 700.

"In my best years I was winning 65-80 matches, so if I was winning 40-50 matches for the next couple of years, it's certainly doable. I think I'm on nine wins this year and I'm not really playing that well."

On the women's side, Raducanu came through a rollercoaster match to register her first ever win at Indian Wells.

The teen defeated French star Caroline Garcia 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to advance to the next round in the California desert.

The US Open champion got off to a dream start as she surged into a 3-0 lead in the opening set.

She saved three break points in the fifth game before eventually taking the opening set.

The veteran Garcia came roaring back though in the second set and broke Raducanu three times en route to levelling the match.

But the Bromley local composed herself and was able to raise her game and dominate the final set, taking it 6-1 and securing a vital win.

"I thought the level of tennis was pretty high. It could have gone either way," said Raducanu post-match.

"She plays extremely powerfully and fast so as soon as I let up in the second set she climbed on top of it straight away.

"I knew I had to make some adjustments in the third set so I'm really happy that I was able to work that out in the match and come through a tough one."

The young star spoke about the importance of this win amid a difficult period of battling injuries, which derailed her hopes at the Australian Open and the Guadalajara event in Mexico.

"Today I just really wanted to play free and swing. During, when things were getting difficult, I was like, ‘just think how bad you're going to feel if you let this slip, after having your chances," she commented.

"This one definitely meant a lot to me. Definitely a lot of joy."

Raducanu will play Petra Martic next, while Murray faces Alexander Bublik.

Harriet Dart also reached a career landmark at the tournament, as she claimed the first top 20 win of her career with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Elina Svitolina.
