A British journalist, Charlotte Peet, 32, has been reported missing in Brazil for nearly two weeks, as confirmed by the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in Brazil (ACIE).
Peet was last in contact with a friend in Rio de Janeiro on February 8, seeking a place to stay while in São Paulo and planning to head to Rio, according to ACIE's statement.
After losing contact with Peet, her family raised concerns, leading to the report of her disappearance to Brazilian police on February 17. The case was initially reviewed by the Tourist Assistance Police in Rio and later transferred to São Paulo's homicide and personal protection division (DHPP) for further investigation.
The 5th Precinct of the DHPP's Missing Persons Division is actively working to locate Peet and uncover the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, as stated by São Paulo's public security secretariat.
ACIE has urged authorities to intensify the search efforts to find the missing journalist promptly. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has also confirmed that they are supporting Peet's family and liaising with local authorities in Brazil.
Peet, who had previously lived in Brazil as a correspondent, returned to the country in November 2024 after a brief stint in the United Kingdom. Fluent in Portuguese, she has freelanced for various publications throughout her career, as indicated on her LinkedIn profile.
The situation has raised concerns among the journalistic community, with hopes for a swift resolution to the case and the safe return of Charlotte Peet.
