Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) retained power in the national elections by winning the most seats, but not enough to pass the 272 parliamentary majority mark. Modi was forced to rely on coalition partners to return to power.
The opposition alliance, which goes by the acronym INDIA, collectively won more than 230 of the total 543 seats.
