A huge crash marred the start of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, forcing the race to be stopped after just one lap.

In front of a record crowd of 142,000, the race was red-flagged after an incident at the very first corner after the Alpha Romeo of Zhou Guanyu was left upside down behind a wall.

George Russell and Pierre Gasly touched down the main straight, sending Russell's Mercedes into Zhou's car, which flipped upside down on the track before spinning onto the gravel.

Once the car hit the gravel, it flipped over the tyre wall and into the catch fencing that separates the crowd from the circuit, landing upside down behind a wall.

Zhou later gave himself the "all clear" on Twitter.

Following the incident, Russell told Sky Sports that he ran to check on Zhou.

Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon, Sebastian Vettel and Yuki Tsunoda were all caught up in that, and subsequent crashes at the first corner.

Zhou was extracted from the car and stretchered away from the scene, with his team saying he did not lose consciousness or suffer any fractures in the crash.

"Considering the circumstances, he's pretty well," his team said.

Carlos Sainz Jr went on to win his first career Formula One race.

Sainz was in the lead with Charles Leclerc close behind and, while Ferrari at first said they were "free to fight," the Italian team then asked Sainz to let Leclerc past to avoid losing time to Lewis Hamilton.

But a safety car came out and Ferrari brought Sainz into the pits for fresher, grippier soft tires. Leclerc was left on older, hard tires and Sainz soon passed his teammate to regain the lead and pull away for his first victory in his 150th F1 start.

"Today the win does feel a bit of a relief," said Sainz.

"Honestly, I never stopped believing that this dream was going to come, even though this year has been tough for me."

He had finished second or third 11 times before winning and was a frustratingly close second to Verstappen at the last race in Canada.
