British delicacy branded 'war crime' and 'grounds for divorce' but others are proud

Britain is known for enjoying a range of weird and wonderful delicacies.

And like Marmite - you tend to love them or hate them.

Well, the same is true of one meal shared to Reddit by a disgusted diner, who could not believe what their partner served up.

But a photo of the meal has caused a stir, as people failed to agree whether it was brilliant or barbaric.

Some were so incensed they even branded the dinner as a "war crime" and "grounds for divorce".

The trouble started when the post's writer shared a picture of the meal to the CasualUK forum.

It was captioned: "My SO and family in law seem to think tinned tomatoes and mash is a normal UK meal. I disagree so much. What are your thoughts on this monstrosity?"

And people had lots to say about the photo, which features bangers and mash lathered in what looks to be a whole tin of tomatoes.

On the one hand, people shared their love for the meal, which many remembered enjoying as children.

One person wrote: "Very common in my council house childhood.

"My mum calls it 'tomato gravy'."

Another said: "Yes this is a staple in my working class family. When I make it for my mum I try to add some garlic/herbs but she prefers it plain.

"Maybe it's regional, my family are Londoners."

And while others agreed it was a classic example of "British food", they didn't think it is something to be proud of.

"This is what reenforces the horrible British food stereotype," read one comment.

Several people learning about the meal for the first time were also left shocked and dismayed.

"I've literally thrown up in my mouth a little," said one person.

"This plate might be a war crime," added a second, and another wrote: "Grounds for divorce."
