British Airways suffers major outage with flights cancelled and website down

British Airways has suffered another major outage this evening with passengers claiming their flights have been grounded at Heathrow.

The company's website has been completely inaccessible tonight, but they have said they are still operating flights and check-ins.

BA's check-in system was reportedly down in the second outage inside 10 days.

The airline says it is working to overcome the issues that are affecting operations. A spokesperson said they will provide further updates as quickly as possible.

There have been suggestions that pilots can't access weight and balance systems.

BA said in a statement tonight: "We are experiencing significant technical issues this evening which are affecting the running of our operation and regrettably has led to the cancellation of a number of flights.

"We are working as quickly as possible to resolve things and we have back-up plans in place so that customers flying can still check-in at the airport this evening.

"We apologise that this might be slower than usual, but we are doing everything we can to get as many of our flights away as planned.

"We are sorry to our customers, it’s been a very difficult week and we can only apologise for any further disruption they may experience this evening.

"We are doing all we can to ensure that we provide up to date information about what is going on. We will make decisions about our operation tomorrow as soon as we can and notify affected customers of any changes.

Heathrow Airport, meanwhile, said: “Heathrow's systems are operating as normal.

"We are aware of a technical issue that British Airways are investigating and we will be working with them to provide updates to passengers as soon as they are available.”

British Airways' app is also down, with many customers taking to social media to complain.

On Twitter, the airline said they were doing all they can to get to the bottom of the issues.

People have been discussing the problems on the platform as frantic flyers claim some planes have been grounded.

One user posted: "Am at Heathrow. British Airways flights all grounded as the computers have piled in. BA’s screens have gone off but the main ones in the hall are still on. BA staff seem very chilled, no flapping."

Another said: "[Second] time in a week I’m sat on a plane going nowhere. This time an IT issue. No information coming out, no provisions on board. Not good enough."

A third posted at 8pm: "In T5 at LHR, all British Airways systems have been down for over an hour, all flights are grounded."
