British Airways passengers issued urgent warning over missing luggage 'scam'

An urgent warning has been issued to British Airways passengers, after an alleged scam has been tricking those with missing luggage out of money.

Passengers have claimed that they have been contacted via social media about their missing luggage, and have been asked for contact details and payment to have their belongings delivered, reports Birmingham Live. However, the airline has confirmed that they do not charge any fees for luggage retrieval.

Many passengers have been attempting to contact British Airways on social media about their missing luggage. But, they have then been contacted by suspicious accounts masquerading as BA, and charging them fees to have their bags retrieved.

The scam has already alleged to have worked on a few customers, as one contacted The Independent to ask if a social media account was real when it asked for their contact details - to which they were told it was not. Another person had fallen victim shortly after, writing on social media: "Can someone call me and explain why I had to pay for luggage that the airline did not send to its destination?"

Another woman tweeted the same account, saying: "One of your employees just contacted me and told me I had to pay to get my baggage because it is still in Dallas."

And while this single account has been suspended on that basis, holidaymakers have still been warned to watch out for the potential scam continuing on social media.

Edinburgh Live have contacted British Airways for comment.
