British Airways caps ticket sales to Edinburgh Airport from Heathrow

British Airways has suspended selling short-haul flights from Heathrow for at least a week with flights to Edinburgh at risk.

Heathrow Airport have admitted to struggling to meet the demands of the surge of holidaymakers, blaming a shortfall in workers from third party companies including airlines. This led the airport to ask airlines to limit their services.

Now British Airways, who also have been struggling with the wave of customers have announced they are extending their suspension on flight tickets for another week.

In a statement, the airline said: "As a result of Heathrow's request to limit new bookings, we've decided to take responsible action and limit the available fares on some Heathrow services to help maximise rebooking options for existing customers, given the restrictions imposed on us and the ongoing challenges facing the entire aviation industry."

Looking at British Airways' website, there are three flights to Edinburgh from Heathrow on August 3 where you are unable to buy economy flight tickets, one flight at 7.05pm with 'one seat left' and another at 7.55pm with just 'three seats left'.

A spokesperson from British Airways told Edinburgh Live: "We took pre-emptive action to reduce our schedule this summer to give customers certainty about their travel plans and to build more resilience into our operation given the ongoing challenges facing the entire aviation industry.

"When Heathrow introduced its passenger cap, we took a small number of additional flights from our schedule and to continue to comply with the cap, we've been taking responsible action by limiting sales or all the available fares on some of our Heathrow services to ensure more seats are available to rebook customers.

"We'll continue to manage bookings to be within the Heathrow imposed cap so we can get our customers away as planned this summer."

While this latest move to suspend flight tickets will not mean cancellations, it does mean there will be limited tickets for last minute bookings.

This comes as a result of Heathrow announcing a cap of no more than 100,000 daily departing passengers until September 11 with BA responding to confirm it would cancel 10,300 flights until October, affecting one million passengers.
