Britannia named worst hotel chain for 10th year in a row

The Britannia hotel chain was ranked as the country's worst to stay in for an astounding 10th consecutive year this week. Consumer group Which? conducted the research based on 4,500 hotel stays, with respondents rating their experiences at 35 hotel chains across 10 key categories that include cleanliness, bed comfort, food, customer service and value for money.

Which? gave Britannia a customer score of 56%, with issues that include cleanliness, mould, faulty toilets and a lack of hot water highlighted by guests after their stays.

For example, The ECHO reports that The Adelphi in Liverpool, where guests travelling on the Titanic stayed before departure, was described as "absolutely dire, drab and smelly" and “tired and tatty,” with a “rough and ready” feel. Guests at the hotel have reported finding bloodstained sheets, mould and filthy messes in their rooms.

It is currently subject to two ongoing separate environmental health investigations by Liverpool City Council. One of the probes regards the death of a 21-year-old woman whose body was found crushed under a wardrobe.

Guy Hobbs, editor of Which? Travel, said: “With a decade of dismal reviews cementing its place as one of the UK’s worst hotel chains, our results suggest that Britannia should be avoided at all costs.”
