Britain to be as hot as Barcelona this week as 'Saharan plume' sends mercury soaring

Brits can expect more of the springtime sun warming much of the UK today, with fine weather and balmy temperatures forecast for much of the week.

Met Office meteorologist Richard Miles said this afternoon would bring “nice” weather for most, although the “far northwest of the UK will hold on to the showers and the breezier weather”.

“Tomorrow there will be a band of rain across the country, there will be quite a bit of low cloud around and a bit more of a wet day tomorrow,” Mr Miles said.

“But we’re expecting a few fine days towards the end of the week, with temperatures around 15C and 16C over most of the UK.”

In the sun, balmy conditions can be expected across the UK today, with the mid-teen temperatures on par with those in the Catalonian capital Barcelona in Spain.

And temperatures could be higher than some Spanish holiday resorts including the Costa Brava where it is unlikely that the mercury will rise above 14C.

The mild weather comes after a freezing start this morning, with temperatures having dropped as low as -1C in central England.

According to the Met Office, average temperatures for this time of the year were 11-12C in the south and 9-10C in the north.

Mr Miles said temperatures were slightly above average for this time of year.

A front tomorrow will bring slightly cooler temperatures, with a high of 15C in southeast England.

The Midlands would see wet and wintry conditions while Scotland and Northern Ireland could expect drier weather, but temperatures decidedly in the single figures.

For most parts, it would be a cloudier day with rainy periods.

However, the rain was expected to clear by Thursday as a warm front moved up from the south, bringing sunny spells and temperatures of 14-15C.

Friday will get off to a chilly start but would be a dry day across the UK as temperatures picked up once more to 16C, possibly 17C in the southeast.
