Britain's Top Takeaways: Edinburgh restaurant Sabzi to battle it out on new BBC show

A much-loved family-run restaurant in Edinburgh is about to battle it out for the title of Britain's Top Takeaway on a new BBC Two series airing next week.

Sabzi (pronounced sub-zee) have been dishing out hearty Punjabi dishes to the people of Edinburgh since lockdown began, having started out as a pop-up before opening permanent premises on Ferry Road.

Mum Paula and sons Ryan and Stevie Singh cook up secret recipes passed down generations from Northern India to Leith as well as modern takes on the traditional - with their Masala chips a must.

Now, Sabzi will be making its television debut in an episode of Britain’s Top Takeaways on Tuesday, May 10 at 8pm.

The eight-episode series will be co-hosted by BBC Radio 2 drivetime host Sara Cox and comedian Darren Harriott.

The show will see some of the UK's best-loved independent takeaways battling it out in a fast-food showdown that crowns a different winner each week.

Each stand-alone episode will feature five takeaways from the same sector who will compete in the specially built 'Top Takeaway Kitchen'.

They'll have to cook up their best takeaway meals which will then be sent to local households who will decide that episode's winner.

Sabzi wrote on Instagram: "It’s been a tough secret to keep in, but it’s finally out!

"We’ll be on Britain’s Top Takeaways, airing on @bbc 2, Tuesday the 10th May at 8pm. You’ll also be able to catch us on @bbciplayer after.

"It’s crazy to think our wee family restaurant in Leith only started out as a pop up during the pandemic, and now we’re going to be on national telly! We’ll be flying the flag for Scotland - get comfy and make sure to tune in."

Britain's Top Takeaways starts on Monday 9 May on BBC Two.
