Britain's quirkiest hotels list features two unique Edinburgh stays with a difference

With the multitude of hotels on offer, sometimes they can feel a bit same-y.

A good location, cleanliness and all the mod cons are certainly the least we expect we splash out on an overnight stay. But often, with several hotel chains going global and popping up in what feels like every city in the world, we can get a little bored of staring at the same old whitewashed walls.

So if we're feeling a little fancy, we might be minded to treat ourselves a little and book in to a hotel which harbours just a bit more character.

For guests looking for a stay in Edinburgh, they're spoilt for choice.

Thankfully our city oozes charm, history and stunning architecture, which is regularly echoed when it comes to the capital's accommodation options.

And that's been further emphasised by the inclusion of two Edinburgh hotels in The Times' latest round-up of what their writers believe to be 'the quirkiest hotels in the UK'.

Their 21-strong list features the likes of Somerset castles, a luxury Shrangri-La at the top of The Shard and even a Norfolk windmill.

And rubbing shoulders alongside these unique stays includes the famous Witchery, which made its way on to number two on the list, with the article praising the historic Edinburgh spot for its 'gothic extravagance on the Royal Mile'.

The beautiful Fingal in Leith (Instagram @fingaledinburgh)

It read: "Run by restaurateur James Thomson, this place also offers nine wildly over-the-top suites straight out of a Bram Stoker story: tapestries, candelabra, gilded paintings, wooden panels, stone staircases and gothic furniture galore.

"Each suite has its own peculiarity: the Inner Sanctum is stuffed with antiques, the Vestry has a headboard crafted from organ pipes and the library has a bathroom hidden behind a secret bookcase.

"Several also offer fine Edinburgh views, especially the Turret Room."

A little further down the list, perhaps there's no surprise at the inclusion on Fingal, the luxury liner which was recently found near the top of the UK's best hotels list published by TripAdvisor.

Describing the one-of-a-kind Leith Shore stay as 'capturing a sense of oceangoing grandeur', The Times said: "You might not be able to sail on the Royal Yacht Britannia, but you can sleep on a restored liner moored along the Leith waterfront in Edinburgh.

"It’s been kitted out in art deco style, with gleaming wood, curvy lines, warm colours and circular portholes peeping out over the water; the nicest rooms are the split-level duplexes, which really capture a sense of oceangoing grandeur.

"The restaurant is really romantic, too — and if you want to push the boat out, you can book special packages that include a private tour and dinner on the Royal Yacht."

Congratulations to these two hotels for being included in the list! To see all 21 hotels included on the list, you can visit The Times website here.
