Britain's loneliest dog has picnic alone on 365th day in rescue shelter

One of Britain's loneliest dogs is still waiting for a loving owner to give him his first home, after spending more than 365 days living in a rescue.

Staff at the animal centre wanted to spoil Henry and mark the unwanted milestone of an entire year by treating him to an outdoor picnic complete with dog chews and gifts.

The three-year-old lurcher first arrived at Battersea Dogs and Cats home after being picked up off the streets last year - but so far, nobody has stepped forward to give him a forever family.

Henry has now been at the Windsor site for more than 10 times the average stay of 34 days.

He is described as being a "ladies man", affectionate and loving - but can be timid and anxious when it comes to meeting new people.

Staff say his shy nature may be one of the reasons why he keeps being overlooked by potential new owners.

Hannah Gee, dog rehoming team leader, said: "Henry came into Battersea as a stray, so we do not know much about his history.

"However since he has been with us, he has been very affectionate and is looking forward to finally having a home of his own.

"When Henry gets to know you, his loving and scatty side shines through - he absolutely loves curling up together with his favourite people and adores a duvet.

"Henry struggles with anxiety and is looking to find somebody who can spend and dedicate time with him until he is feeling settled.

"He’s also something of a ladies’ man although he has been building his confidence in this area whilst he’s been with us, and this is something new owners can continue to develop with ongoing support from our experts here at Battersea."

Henry would benefit from being the only dog in a house with owners who ideally have experience with sighthounds.
