Britain's Got Talent star Jonathan Goodwin tells ITV's Lorraine how he 'nearly died' as partner Amanda Abbington breaks down

Escapologist Jonathan Goodwin and his partner, Sherlock star Amanda Abbington, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday, May 6 to discuss the moment that he was paralysed during a stunt. You can read more about this incident here.

During the interview, Amanda broke down in tears as she called her future husband an "inspiration". Chatting to Lorraine Kelly, Britain's Got Talent star Jonathan, who is from Pembrokeshire and now uses a wheelchair, said: “It sounds pretty dramatic but I did nearly die.”

Jonathan, who appeared on BGT in 2019, shattered both legs, broke his spine and suffered third degree burns in a stunt which went drastically wrong last year. He was supposed to escape a straight jacket whilst upside down 30ft in the air between two suspended cars. In a shocking turn of events, Goodwin was crushed between the cars as they caught on fire.

During his interview with Lorraine, Jonathan described how he effectively "saved himself" after ensuring not to hit his head when he fell. Despite the remarkable footage being shared across social media, the BGT daredevil has opted to not watch it.

In the emotional interview, Jonathan tells Lorraine that he offered Amanda a "get out of jail free card" following the accident as it was early on in their relationship. This prompted Amanda to start crying with Lorraine reassuring her that, "it's all very emotional". The pair, who got together after Amanda's split with The Hobbit star Martin Freeman, talked about how they are "closer and tighter" than ever following the incident.

As Amanda broke down in tears to Lorraine, she told the presenter that she and her fiancé were prepared to “be in the moment” and grab life by both hands. Describing her future husband, she jokingly said: “He’s amazing and a total inspiration but also an idiot.”

Looking ahead, Jonathan’s options are limited as according to his surgeon, the damage to his spine was “the worst that he’d ever seen”. Despite this, the couple are excited to marry later this year.
