Brit tourist dies after leaving sea and feeling unwell at popular Portugal beach

A British tourist has died after going for a swim at a popular beach in Portugal.

He is said to have started to feel unwell following the dip, before suffering a cardiac arrest.

Lifeguards and other beachgoers helped to try and save the 55-year-old man, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene in Praia dos Alemães in Albufeira.

Emergency calls were made on Thursday afternoon after the unnamed patient collapsed.

Paramedics, police and firefighters all raced to the beach.

The National Maritime Authority said the initial alert was made at 1.34pm and multiple resuscitation were made.

The man's body was later taken to the Legal Medical Office of Portimão by volunteer firefighters.

In a statement, the authority said: "Following an alert received at 1:34 pm, through the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, informing that there was a person in cardiorespiratory arrest on Alemães beach, elements of the Maritime Police Station of Albufeira were activated, as well as elements of the Fire Department.

"Volunteers from Albufeira and a Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER).

"Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the victim, a 55-year-old man of British nationality, was being assisted by lifeguards on the beach, with the support of people who were nearby, until arrival of INEM elements who initiated resuscitation manoeuvres to the victim.

"After several attempts at resuscitation, it was not possible to reverse the situation, and the death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor.

"The body was later transported by the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira to the Legal Medical Office of Portimão, following indications from the Public Ministry.

"The Albufeira Maritime Police Post took care of the incident."

Last month a British woman died Albufeira, Portugal, after also feeling unwell following a swim in the sea on Penedo beach.

The National Maritime Authority said the alarm was raised around 1.15pm on September 21 when a person was feeling unwell after getting out of the water.

The 45-year-old victim was assisted on the beach by the Istituto Nacional de Emergência Médica de Portugal, but her death was sadly declared on the beach.
