Brit living abroad details eight things you should do in UK heatwave - including naps

A Brit who lives in Madrid has answered the nation's prayers by listing eight ways to deal with the heat during the UK heatwave.

Simon Smith took to Twitter to share his advice, explaining that it was 38 degrees at 11pm and when he was driving at 6pm it was a whopping 44 degrees - but Britain is set to experience similar weather shortly.

He then said this is his second Madrid heatwave, so he wanted to give tips for those in the UK as we'll soon be facing record breaking temperatures.

He wrote: "Forget everything you know about windows. Windows are for keeping the air OUT. When we first hit high 30s in June I thought all the neighbours had buggered off. No, but they all kept windows and shutters/blinds shut/down all day."

He then said to stay hydrated with cold water throughout the day.

He suggested doing things in the morning because it's the only part of the day which isn't ridiculously hot. "If it’s going to be in the 40s mid-afternoon, then that is going to linger until way into the morning. Don’t go thinking that the sun ‘disappearing’ means anything. It doesn’t", he wrote.

Then he suggested an afternoon nap: "Seriously. If you can. And I know this is a cliche. But … siesta. It makes absolutely no sense to be forcing yourself to stay awake at the most unproductive time of the day. Then trying to force yourself to sleep when there are corks popping outside."

Then Simon suggested something which is great advice regardless of the weather conditions, writing: "Slow down. Pick three things you want to achieve today and focus on them and nothing more. I think that’s the best piece of advice I have."

He then went on to spread more positivity, as he wrote: "If you can, enjoy it. Sunsets, shadows, memories. I know, global warming and everything - but being green and being decent are not mutually incompatible. Fit solar panels. Eat in-season vegetables. And reward yourself with treats…"

Then he suggested buying suitable clothing for reasonable prices from retailers such as H&M and Primark.

He also said the most important thing was to just 'slow down.'
