A Brit who plunged to his death from a second-floor hotel balcony in Ibiza survived a 30-foot fall at the same resort five years ago.
The 35-year-old was impaled on a parasol pole in a near-tragedy in September 2018 and had to be rescued by police and firefighters, well-placed sources confirmed.
But he lost his life in a second fall in the early hours of Tuesday this week from a nearby apartment block in the party resort of San Antonio.
Police found drugs in his bedroom in the shared apartment where he was staying following the tragedy. It is above a British supermarket and opposite the famous O Beach Club which is popular with celebrities and is co-owned by Gary Lineker’s brother Wayne.
Full autopsy results are not yet available, but police sources said overnight investigators believed the dead man may have been acting under the influence of drugs when he went over the edge of his balcony.
The alarm was raised around 3.15am on Tuesday and initial 999 callers reported a man lying unconscious on the pavement but he was already dead by the time the first emergency responders arrived.
Although he was described as a non-resident after news of the tragedy emerged, it is not clear if he had been on holiday or was working in San Antonio.
On June 23 amateur footballer John McKenna, 22, from Carlisle in Cumbria, died in the same resort after plunging from a three-star hotel.
He was pronounced dead at the scene following desperate attempts by paramedics to save him. Pal and former Carlisle United player Josh Dixon said that he was “heartbroken”.
He wrote in a social media tribute: “Absolutely heartbroken writing this. One of my closest mates all the way through school. Wherever you went you would put a smile on someone’s face. Will be a huge miss to us all. Rest easy big man.”
Another friend, Olly Doyle, added of John, known as 'big John': “A true gent and the most genuinely nice lad around. Never a smile off his face, one of the best. Rest easy big man.”
An electrician, John, who was staying at the azuline Hotel Llevant where the tragedy happened, played for Carlisle City Sunday League Premier side Scotby FC.
The club said in a tweet after learning of John’s death: “Today we lost a legend, a brilliant player but an even better person."
