Bristolians can't bear to watch The Holiday as script blunder makes their blood boil

It's almost Christmas, which means crisp-wintry nights on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket with a hot chocolate and your favourite festive film on the TV.

From Love Actually to Elf, there are countless titles to choose from, but for many, The Holiday is always on their must-watch list. The feel-good festive rom-com from 2006, starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law oozes sadness, joy and great music – a good recipe for any Christmas film.

Surprisingly, it turns out Bristolians don't agree. For some people who live in the West Country, there are a few minutes of this film that make it so hard to watch, some people end up turning it off completely, Bristol Live reports.

In case you need reminding, The Holiday centres around two women (Diaz and Winslet) who both find themselves single and miserable at Christmas. They find each other on a property rental website, and decide to swap homes for the holidays.

With Diaz's character Amanda in Surrey, and Winslet's character Iris in Los Angeles, you see plenty of idyllic homes and locations.

Although arguably there are several blunders in the film, one comment in particular has Bristolians seething.

When Iris is chatting to her new Hollywood legend neighbour Eli Wallach, he asks her which part of England she's from. Iris says she's from Surrey.

This is where every Bristolian watching lets out a loud huff of utter horror – as the Academy Award winner and somewhat of a knowledgeable Hollywood historian proclaims that "Cary Grant was from Surrey".

A delighted Irish replied: "Yes, he was," and this is the part where every Bristolian will be yelling at their screens.

Proud Bristolians will be well aware that Cary Grant, who was named the second-greatest male star of Golden Age Hollywood cinema, after Humphrey Bogart, was born and raised in Bristol, about two hours west of Surrey.

Every year, locals have to bite their teeth together while watching this scene in the film.

One person on Twitter said: "Every time I watch The Holiday I get very annoyed at the bit where the old guy Arthur says 'Cary Grant was from Surrey!'... No he wasn't! He was born Archibald Leach and was from Bristol!... *Breathe*.... and on with the film..."

Another commented: "Watching The Holiday and the old dude in the film asked Kate Winslet where she was from, she said Surrey and he goes that's where Cary Grant came from. Bristol's most famous son, Cary Grant."

A third added: "In The Holiday... Why does Eli Wallach say Cary Grant is from Surrey when he's from Bristol? And why doesn't Kate Winslet correct him? Why doesn't he say Laurence Olivier instead? This is the biggest flaw in an otherwise stone cold festive classic."
