Bristol weather: Hour by hour forecast as Met Office warns of flash flooding, hail and thunderstorms

Weather warnings are predicting thunderstorms and heavy rain are set to hit Bristol over the course of today (July 3).

A double warning across the South West was put in place by the Met Office yesterday (Friday) warning of thunderstorms across Bristol, Gloucestershire and large parts of Somerset over the course of the day.

The warning covering Bristol, in place from 1pm today through to 9pm this evening, carries a threat of rain, with the alert predicting "heavy showers bringing a risk of flooding and disruption" across the city as well as stretching on down the north coast of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

The warning also says people in affected areas should expect the following:

  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life

The Met Office local predictions for Bristol indicate the worst of the weather is set to hit throughout the mid to late afternoon, with thunderstorms currently predicted around 5pm in the city.

The chance of rain is set to climb from 2pm onwards, before a clearer evening follows despite some chance of late rain as we approach midnight.

Here are the latest hour-by-hour forecasts for Bristol, according to the Met Office.

The forecase includes thunder and the Met Office has issued a separate warning for thunderstorms to the east of Bristol, saying "heavy rain may lead to flash flooding with the risk of frequent lightning and hail."
