Traffic on one of the main roads into Bristol city centre will be disrupted until 'at least Monday morning' as a burst water main is proving tricky to sort out.
The water on the A38 at Stokes Croft started gushing out of the road close to Turbo Island on Friday morning, and led to lots of congestion and re-routed buses as Bristol Water rushed to the scene to try to sort it out.
They managed to contain the leak and reopen the road enough to allow one lane of traffic through - but the road will remain like that throughout the weekend, it seems.
Updates: Stokes Croft closed due to emergency repairs
A spokesperson for Bristol Water said its teams found the problem was more of a challenge than they hoped it would be when they first got the call.
"There is a burst main outside 80 Stokes Croft," a spokesperson for Bristol Water said.
"Our crew and Inspector have been on site since this morning. Unfortunately the repairs are proving more complicated than we’d hoped and traffic management will need to stay in place until at least Monday morning," she added.
The burst water main has also meant disruption to bus services along the A38 from Gloucester Road into town on Friday. The works to sort out the problem closed the southbound road at the junction with Jamaica Street, so that meant the number 70, 71, 73, 75, 76 and the AZ1 buses had to go around Kingsdown to get to the city centre. The road was partially reopened at around 4.30pm on Friday, so buses should now be running down Stokes Croft and using the stop outside the Caribbean Croft.
