Bristol street artist creates huge mural to celebrate return of Premier League

A street artist from Bristol has created a huge mural of three popular footballers in London to mark the start of the new Premier League season.

The artwork, commissioned by Sky and brought to life by Jody Thomas, is located near to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and features Euro 2020 heroes Jordan Pickford, Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling.

It celebrates the beginning of Sky's coverage of the Premier League, which kicks off this evening (Friday, August 13) as Brentford take on Arsenal.

Jody told Bristol Live he worked tirelessly through adverse weather to complete the painting in time.

“I started it last Thursday (August 5)," he said. "By Friday it was clear that the weather was going to turn on me. We had monsoon-like weather and heavy winds to deal with.

“I was working from sun-up, around 6am, to midnight every day to get it done. I am pleased with how it has ended up. I worked very long and hard on it.” The final piece includes more than 55 colours and shades of acrylic spray paint, creating a realistic picture of the celebrated trio.

Although the piece is designed to celebrate Sky’s broadcasting of the Premier League, Jody believes that the mural has a deeper message.

“This summer we saw how football has the fantastic power to bring people together- sharing each other’s passion for the sport is really special,“ he added.

“I’m very neutral about football but I get obsessed by the Euros and the World Cup. I think the energy and the good will that came from the Euros was great and hopefully that is reflected through the mural.

“Seeing the fans get up close and personal with the nation’s favourite players with my latest mural has been amazing.”

The three players painted - Jordan Pickford, Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling - were voted as England fans’ three favourite players from Euro 2020.

In the poll conducted by Sky Q, new Man City playmaker Jack Grealish came fourth while Arsenal’s young star Bukayo Saka came seventh. Harry Kane and Declan Rice also featured in the top 10.

Fans also voted for their ‘Top 10 Premier League Players of all time'. Portuguese and Man United legend Cristiano Ronaldo topped the chart whilst Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer made up the top three.
