Bristol's favourite fast-food restaurant named in new research

Bristol is home to an abundance of fast food options - from burgers and hot sandwiches, to pizza and various forms of chicken. There are vegan and vegetarian options aplenty and both world-renowned and local independent brands to choose from.

But, if someone were to ask you what you thought Bristol residents loved the most when it comes to fast food, what do you think your answer would be? Would it surprise you and, most importantly, would it match your own favourite?

A new study has revealed the UK's favourite fast food restaurants, including the people of Bristol's top three choices. Health experts at Now Patient have carried out the research to reveal the areas of the country with the most fast food restaurants per 100,000 people, as well as revealing each city's favourite fast food chain and how the number of restaurants has changed over recent years.

Since 2013, the number of fast-food restaurants in the UK has increased by more than 31%, with the country now home to over 48,000 restaurants, compared to just over 37,000 in 2013. To gather results, the team at Now Patient- used World Population Review to find out the most populous cities in the UK.

They then used store locators for McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, KFC, and Five Guys to find out the number of stores in each of their locations, removing any cities that did not come up when using the store locators from its 'seeding list'. Finally, Now Patient used Statista to find the number of fast food restaurants and takeaways in the UK from 2013.

When looking at the most popular fast-food restaurant across the UK, McDonald's is the clear winner, with KFC taking second spot and Subway in third. And, when it comes to Bristol's favourites, it's a similar story...

Bristol's top three favourite fast food restaurants

  1. McDonald's
  2. KFC
  3. Subway

Bristol was ranked at joint number 26 (with Cardiff) in the list based on number of fast food restaurants per 100,000 people, with a figure of 11.

What about the rest of the UK?

The research also revealed that Newcastle has 27.5 fast-food restaurants per 100,000 people, which is more than any other city in the UK. Manchester has the second highest figure, with 27.3 per 100,000 people.

London has 4.9 fast food restaurants per 100,000 people, which is lower than any other city in the UK. Southend-on-Sea has the second lowest figure, with 7.1 per 100,000 people, according to the research.
