Bristol's 'best' Wetherspoon pub still up for sale after almost three months

A Wetherspoon pub said to be one of the "best" in the Bristol area is still searching for a new owner to take it on. Savills, who is the estate agent marketing the property, confirmed The Jolly Sailor is still available to purchase after it was put up on the market in November.

The Jolly Sailor in Hanham was one of 32 venues put up for sale in 2022 as a "commercial decision" by JD Wetherspoon. The group, which operates approximately 800 pubs across the UK and Ireland, had previously warned of financial worries, citing £30 million in losses after raising staff pay and funding repairs across its venues.

Hanham high street is only home to a handful of pubs - including The Blue Bowl and The Maypole - and regulars have said they hope The Jolly Sailor will continue to run as a pub after the sale has gone through. If the sale goes through, it will be the second Wetherspoon pub to close in the Bristol area in just over a year, following the closure of St George's Hall in Redfield.

The listing had previously said "price on application" but it is now currently up for sale for offers in the region of £500,000 as a freehold. It's also being marketed by CBRE Ltd in London.

It has a rich history as a pub, situated on the main road through Hanham following the line of a Roman road to Bath, which was built in the first century. It was originally George’s Brewery back in the 18th century and the earliest recorded landlord is Charles Coole, in charge during 1853–74.

Today, it holds a central position on the busy high street. It's comprised of two storeys with a bar on each floor and boasts an enormous beer garden with enough seating for approximately 74 customers.

The pub has a 3.9 star rating on Google and has garnered mixed reviews on Tripadvisor but one customer has given it a glowing five-star rating even calling it the "best spoons in Bristol". They praised the staff at the Jolly Sailor for their "friendly, can-do attitude" after a visit back in December.

In recent years, customers had highlighted the pub's quick service and polite workers behind the bar. Conversely, another reviewer questioned how long the pub would last, claiming there was a "lack of staff" and "no control of loud customers".
