Bristol Rovers' rivals Exeter City set to lose manager just two days after drawing with the Gas

Bristol Rovers’ League One rivals Exeter City are set to lose head coach Matt Taylor, with the 40-year-old bound for Championship side Rotherham United just two days after the Gas drew 2-2 at St James Park.

The Exeter Supporters Trust tweeted a message confirming Taylor’s departure on Monday morning, stating: "We'd like to put on record our sincere thanks to Matt for his committed and outstanding achievements at Exeter City."

But it was swiftly deleted with the BBC reporting a press conference has been arranged at 4pm to discuss the matter, which will likely confirm Taylor’s departure after four years at the helm of the Grecians.

Taylor had previously admitted on Saturday that an approach had been made by the Championship club and he would make his decision over the following 24 hours.

Rotherham have been searching for a new manager since the exit of Paul Warne to Derby County last month and after being rejected by Cambridge United’s Mark Bonner, who the Gas face this Saturday, have turned to Taylor.

The 40-year-old led the Grecians to promotion last season from League Two, finishing runners-up to Forest Green Rovers and has enjoyed an impressive start to life in League One, taking them to 11th in the table despite one of the lowest budgets in the division.

Rovers secured a point in Devon on Saturday through Ryan Loft’s injury time header in a game the Gas had dominated for large periods. In the build-up to that fixture, Joey Barton had commented on the feud that existed with the Exeter coaching staff following their battles in League Two the previous campaign.

Barton and Taylor do share a common trait with both having replaced Paul Tisdale at their respective clubs: Barton in 2021 at Rovers and Taylor for Exeter in 2018.

"We've had a fantastic period of time with this football club, a fantastic group of players," Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"I've certainly done a lot for this football club. I'm incredibly proud of what I've achieved alongside a lot of people at this football club, which is why it's going to be a difficult decision. It's a level we all want to play at and we all want to work at, so that's the attraction."
