Bristol Rovers' 'lucky charm' who had life-changing surgery got to lead team out ahead of incredible 7-0 win

Young Oscar Cridge's dream finally came true as he got to walk on Bristol Rovers' pitch ahead of their epic promotion winning match against Scunthorpe United at the weekend.

The five-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, desperately wanted to lead his beloved team at the Memorial Stadium without aid for the first time since his life-changing surgery in January.

Rovers said on social media: "Oscar was our lucky charm!" and retweeted the tear-jerking moment to thousands of followers having believed the football-mad youngster was the cause of their good fortune.

Not only were the matchday fans delighted to see him walk unaided on Saturday, but so were Twitter users who took to social media to congratulate him.

@KellyMountford3 tweeted: "What an incredible young boy and what a game to walk out to."

While @PatDela03682363 commented: "Fantastic to see. Well done to all that made his day so special. Well done to Daz for all his efforts. Respect to all involved. Football at its best."

Through a fundraising appeal - led by musician Daz Sims and an army of supporters, a massive £60,000 was raised to cover Oscar's £35,000 operation fee.

Although the football enthusiast is still in need of further procedures which include physio and rehabilitation over the next two years, he remains hopeful that one day he will be able to play with his friends without the use of his frame or sticks.

"He just wants to run around and play football with his mates, just like any other little boy. The focus now is on building up his strength, " his dad Shaun added. Anyone who wants to follow Oscar's story can do so at Oscar's Journey to Independence on Facebook and Instagram.

Rovers were promoted back to League One by the virtue of goals scored as Joey Barton's Gas defeated Scunthorpe 7-0 on what was the final day of the season.

There were heroes across the park, with Antony Evans and Aaron Collins netting braces before Elliot Anderson scored in the final 10 minutes to spark delirium.
