Bristol Rovers legend Darrell Clarke has issued a heartfelt message of thanks to supporters after Port Vale announced he is returning to work.
The 44-year-old took a period of leave following a close personal bereavement in February, with interim manager Andy Crosby stepping in.
Vale confirmed Clarke will make a 'phased return' supporting Crosby in the dugout before taking full charge of the League Two side again in the summer.
Rovers' affection for Clarke was abundantly clear after his leave of absence became apparent, with the likes of Chris Lines, Gas CEO Tom Gorringe, the club and supporters sending their best wishes to their former manager.
Clarke masterminded an iconic period in modern Rovers history, steering the club to back-to-back promotions to rise from the National League to League One in 2015 and 2016 during a four-and-a-half-year stint that ended in 2018.
Speaking of his emotional return, reported on Vale's official site, Clarke said: “From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank the owners of the football club, my team, club staff and all Port Vale supporters – as well as everyone from the wider football industry and community, including all the clubs I have been at and the League Managers’ Association (LMA) – for the incredible support shown to me and my family during what remains an unimaginably difficult time.
"I’m humbled and so thankful for the outpouring of concern, love and kindness.
"This support has been invaluable, continues to give me strength, and is something that I will never forget. I genuinely feel part of a very special family and community here at Port Vale and I am delighted to be back."
Vale Director of Football Dave Flitcroft added: "I know I speak for everyone at Port Vale when I say we are absolutely delighted to have Darrell back at the club and to be able to benefit again from his expertise, vast experience and the energy he brings."
The club have lost just once in 10 games which has propelled them up to fourth and level on points with Rovers.
The two teams play each other on April 18 and Clarke will undoubtedly receive a hero's reception from the travelling Rovers faithful.
