Bristol restaurant owners to open new site celebrating South Indian cuisine

A new Indian restaurant is set to open this month with two of Bristol's leading restauranteurs at the helm. Kal Dosa on Gloucester Road will focus on the flavours of South India and will be the third restaurant in Raja Munuswamy and Arvind Pawar's portfolio.

Raja and Arvind founded Nutmeg, an Indian restaurant in Clifton Village that celebrates the country's 26 states, in 2016 after they met while working in kitchens around Bristol. They later opened Nadu in Stokes Croft, offering a modern take on Sri Lankan and Tamil cooking.

The new restaurant Kal Dosa will focus on the essence of South Indian train journeys where every station is a gateway to local specialities. The menu will draw inspiration from the team's experiences travelling by the famous South Indian railways.

The menu will feature a selection of dishes specific to the South Indian region, including crispy dosas, delicious thalis, aromatic biryanis, and a variety of rich curries (Kal Dosa)

Raja, one of three owners of the new site, said he was "thrilled to introduce Kal Dosa to Bristol’s vibrant Gloucester Road". He added: "Our team has travelled extensively across South India, immersing ourselves in its rich culinary history. We are excited to share the flavours, traditions, and warmth of South Indian cuisine with the Bristol community."

The dishes will dart from the tropical, mountainous, and coastal states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry. The menu will feature a selection of dishes specific to the South Indian region, including crispy dosas, delicious thalis, aromatic biryanis, and a variety of rich curries and vegetable dishes.

A thali (Kal Dosa)

A dosa is a thin pancake in South Indian cuisine made from a fermented batter of ground black lentils and rice. Nadu in Stokes Croft has become famous for its enormous tear and share dosa since it opened in December 2020.

Kal Dosa has not yet been given an opening date but it is set to start welcoming diners from mid-June. For more information, follow them on social media @kaldosabristol.
