Bristol man convicted of killing OAP is jailed for theft and frauds

A convicted killer has admitted stealing from a vulnerable man and using his bank cards to buy takeaway food. The victim was returning from a night out to Pennywell Road in Bristol.

Bristol Crown Court heard he was struck from behind and fell to the ground. It was the Crown's case that Quanito Chudley then picked up the victim's wallet and phone and used bank cards to spend £93, which included food.

Chudley, 40, of Stapleton Road, pleaded guilty to theft and four frauds after the incident in May last year. In 2003 Chudley was jailed for six-and-a-half years for manslaughter and five-and-a-half for robbery after the mugging of a pensioner - for £5 - in Kingsdown who later died.

Judge Moira Macmillan jailed him for six months. She told Chudley that, as he had already served the equivalent of 11 months' custody, his release should be immediate.

Eshanul Oarith, prosecuting, said police tracked down Chudley with the victim's phone. He was interviewed and made no comment.

Charley Pattison, defending via video link, told the court: "He was labouring under a substance-addicted mindset. He wanted to return the wallet.

"He accepts what he's done and he's remorseful for it. He is an educated man who's had a life blighted by substance addiction."

In September 2002 Chudley, then aged 21, and a 19-year-old female accomplice, robbed 86-year-old Joyce Bryant of her handbag. Mrs Bryant fell during the robbery in the Kingsdown area in Bristol and died later in hospital.

The woman admitted manslaughter and Chudley was found guilty by a jury.
