Bristol Grosvenor Hotel fire: Concerns over stability of building following overnight blaze

There are stability concerns over the derelict Grosvenor Hotel which caught fire last night (October 18). The fire service has confirmed that a structural engineer from Bristol City Council is currently on the scene.

In a video posted on Twitter, Avon Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Ben Thompson gave an update on the blaze. The Incident Commander urged the public to stay away from the scene in Victoria Street as the fire service conduct their investigations.

Mr Thompson said: "I can confirm today that we've got a structural engineer from Bristol City Council on site due to concerns over the stability of the structure itself."

He added: "I can also confirm that investigations are ongoing and the cause of the fire is unknown. For these reasons we advise the public to stay away from the scene while we complete this important activity, and we will try and bring things to business as usual as soon as we can."

Crews from eight different fire stations across the city attended the scene shorlty after 10pm last night after a "large volume of calls" from the public. Fortunately, it has been confirmed there were no casualties following the blaze.

The former hotel building in front of Temple Meads station was earlier in the year considered for multi-million pound deal transformation amidst a council buy-out. The buildings has been empty and decaying for at least 20 years, and has been the subject of years of debate and discussion over what should happen to it.
