Bristol Film Festival: All the weird places you can watch iconic films this autumn

Your cinema essentials might be a large bag of popcorn and a slushy, but this is where you're going wrong. Turns out all you need for an iconic movie night are some cobwebs and a few gravestones.

Ever popped along to your local cemetery for a screening? Bristol Film Festival is coming back, and this means some of the creepiest, coolest, weirdest locations in Bristol is opening its doors to moviegoers for a select few screenings only.

There's a secret under-the-street cave in Bristol people can watch fantasy and horror films in. And a wine cellar where filmgoers can catch a flick and a glass of red.

Bristol Film Festival pairs iconic films with iconic Bristol locations to create an immersive cinema experience even better than those screenings we bought 3D glasses for in 2012. The Film Festival wowed crowds last year, with a post-lockdown celebration showcasing films such as Harry Potter at Hogwarts-esque Clifton College, and it's coming back for its Autumn season with some stellar events listings.

Director Owen Franklin started Bristol Film Festival back in 2015. Film lovers can expect the unexpected, and it's a chance to explore iconic buildings in a new light after-hours, as well as exploring some hidden gems you never knew existed in the city.

This autumn, screenings are being held at the likes of Clifton Observatory, Aerospace Bristol and Arnos Vale Cemetery. Films are also being shown in Redcliffe Caves, The Mount Without and Bristol Museum.

There are even opportunities to pair a screening with a few glasses of wine, with events at Averys Wine Cellars. On Culver Street in Bristol, you can catch classic films like Blazing Saddles and What We Do In The Shadows.

The films will be paired thematically with four selected wines, and visitors will receive a wine reception on arrival. And there is a pre-screening expert-led wine tasting.

The Mount Without is a 15th century, Grade II-listed church on St Michael's Hill screening Leonardo di Caprio's Romeo & Juliet in this romantic setting. Across the road from legendary nightclub and music venue, Thekla, on Bristol's floating harbour, are under-the-street manmade Redcliffe Caves, where classics like Aladdin, The Princess Bride and Jumanji are on.

Over on Queen's Road, at the iconic Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, crowd-pleasers School of Rock, Christmas favourites The Holiday and Elf, and The Greatest Showman are bveing shown. And at Arnos Vale Cemetery be prepared to be spooked by Twilight, The Nun, Hocus Pocus, Corpse Bride and The Addams Family.

Bristol Film Festival runs from September 2 to December 23. The full list of screenings can be found on Bristol Film Festival's website.
