Bristol Covid latest: Twelve deaths recorded in region as cases surge

Twelve more people have died with Covid-19 in the Bristol area in the last 24 hours, as cases of the virus surged in the area.

Five people have died in Bristol within 28 days of being identified as a Covd-19 case by a positive test, while a further five have died in North Somerset and two have died in South Gloucestershire.

Cases also rose significantly in the last day, with 2,335 new cases reported in the wider Bristol region, and 1,096 in the city of Bristol alone.

It marks a significant difference to yesterday, when no deaths were recorded and only 1,261 people tested positive.

However, yesterday also marked the first time that re-infections became included in the daily statistical updates.

Meanwhile, across the UK 112,458 people have tested positive for the virus today, while 219 people have died with it.

And yesterday, only 92,368 cases were recorded nationwide, while just 51 deaths were recorded.

It comes as people with allergies are being urged to book their Covid-19 booster jab, with earlier fears that the Pfizer vaccine could cause issues turning out to have "no scientific basis".

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 129,482 (+1,096)

  • North Somerset: 48,833 (+519)

  • South Gloucestershire: 72,768 (+720)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 645 (+5)

  • North Somerset: 405 (+5)

  • South Gloucestershire: 426 (+2)
