Bristol Covid latest: Three more deaths in region as cases remain high

Three more people have died with Covid-19 in the Bristol region as cases remain at high levels today (February 4).

Two more coronavirus related deaths have been recorded in the city of Bristol in the last 24 hours on record, while someone has also died in North Somerset.

It brings the total number of deaths in the region since the pandemic began to 1,777.

Meanwhile, cases continue to remain high in the area, as 1,835 people have tested positive in the last day.

Case levels have remained steady in the last few days, with 1,752 testing positive across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset yesterday.

However, compared to other periods of the pandemic cases remain high as the much more contagious Omicron variant continues to circulate after emerging in the UK in November 2021.

In Bristol alone, 773 new cases were recorded today, and before the Omicron variant caused cases to regularly reach over 1,000 per day during December 2021 and January 2022, this level was only hit once in the city, on July 15, 2021.

However, the average number of deaths per day over a 7-day period remained as low as 1.6 in Bristol on January 27, the last day on which data is available.

The highest this figure has been in the city was on January 23, 2021 when there were 6.1 daily deaths on average. There was an average case rate of 196 positive tests per day on this date.

In terms of the national picture, the UK recorded 84,053 new cases today, while 254 new people have died.

This represents a drop of about 4,000 cases compared to yesterday, while roughly 50 fewer daily deaths have been recorded.

It comes as new research shows that people who have had a booster or third dose of vaccine have a 93 per cent lower risk of death involving Covid-19 compared with the unvaccinated.
