Bristol Covid latest: One new death in region as cases stabilise

Covid case numbers appear to be stabilising in the Bristol region, with the area recording a similar number of new confirmed cases today as yesterday.

A total of 1,470 new cases of Covid were confirmed in our region today (January 23), versus 1,469 yesterday, bringing the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 265,875.

One further death within 28 days of a positive Covid test was recorded in North Somerset today, bringing our region's total number of deaths to 1,708 since the pandemic began.

After cases fell in every area yesterday, both the City of Bristol and South Gloucestershire have seen very slight rises in new cases - Bristol saw 12 more cases than yesterday, while South Gloucestershire saw 14 more cases.

Both North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset saw slight drops once again.

At the national level, case numbers dropped once again, with the country seeing a drop of 15.4 per cent over the last seven days, although the number of deaths has risen by 1.9 per cent over that same period.

In other news, two major Covid travel rule changes are expected to be announced tomorrow, with ministers expected to confirm how children aged 12-15 will be able to get a Covid pass, and there will be a change to the Covid testing requirement for entering the UK. For the full details, click here.

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 115,365 (+594) up slightly

  • North Somerset: 43,768 (+303)

  • South Gloucestershire: 65,273 (+379) up slightly

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 41,469 (+194)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 627 (-)

  • North Somerset: 387 (+1)

  • South Gloucestershire: 416 (-)

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 278 (-)

Nationally a further 74,799 cases were recorded in the UK today (excluding Scotland due to it being the weekend), and another 75 people have died within 28 days of a positive test.
