Bristol City transfer headlines: Newcastle eye Robins teen, Lee Johnson signs former target

Bristol City's pre-season preparations are underway with the Robins having published their full schedule for the summer, with six matches, home and away, and a European training camp later this month.

Nigel Pearson's squad will welcome three new faces to the group next week in Mark Sykes, Kal Naismith and Kane Wilson but could also be missing a few key individuals due to international commitments.

Alex Scott will be away with England Under-19s at the European Championships, Antoine Semenyo is injured, while Nahki Wells and Andi Weimann are expected to be given extended breaks following their involvement for Bermuda and Austria, respectively, in the Nations League.

Here are the latest transfer headlines involving Bristol City over the last 24 hours...

Robins teen in the spotlight

Bristol City academy midfielder Reuben McAllister is attracting interest from Premier League Newcastle United, report Bristol World.

McAllister, the son of former City left-back and assistant head coach Jamie, has impressed through the age groups at Ashton Gate and made his Under-23s breakthrough earlier in the season at the age of just 15.

The creative midfielder is reportedly on the radar of “a number of Premier League clubs” while there are teams in Scotland also monitoring his progress at the High Performance Centre. McAllister is yet to sign professional terms at City but the club would be loath to lose one of their brightest young prospects.

Johnson gets his man

Former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has his feet under the table at Hibernian and the new head coach has signed Jair Tavares, a winger from Benfica he has tracked since his days at Ashton Gate.

The 21-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Easter Road after Hibs took advantage of a loophole of his contract in Lisbon to bring him to Edinburgh, despite interest from across Portugal.

"We had a little bit of a win in terms of the contract scenario, managing to capitalise on it through a bit of information, and he's a player I’ve tracked all the way since my Bristol City days,” Johnson told the Edinburgh Evening News. "We're looking forward to seeing if he can light up the league and get the Hibs fans off their seats.”

Whitehouse on her away

Bristol City have confirmed that goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse has left the club with Bristol Live understanding that Manchester United goalkeeper Fran Bentley is due to replace her.

Bentley spent last season on loan at Ashton Gate and competed with Whitehouse for the starting jersey. Whitehouse was used by the club in their promotion shoots for the new goalkeeper jersey just over a week ago but is now set to sign for Championship rivals Lewes FC where she hopes to be the designated No1

Bentley is expected to arrive in the West Country in the coming days as Lauren Smith builds a squad with the intent on earning promotion out of the Championship having finished third last season.

Friendly backlash

Some Bristol City fans have expressed dismay following the confirmation of the Robins pre-season schedule with all four home matches to be played behind closed doors at the High Performance Centre.

City will host Cheltenham Town and Portsmouth followed by a double header against Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers but the only access to supporters will be through the Robins TV livestream, which is available at no extra charge to season ticket holders.

City state that with the Championship season kicking off a week early (the weekend of July 30), the pitch at Ashton Gate won't be ready in time to hold pre-season games, with the stadium having played host to a Bristol Bears match plus concerts by The Killers and Elton John since the Robins final game of last season against Hull City.

The capacity of the High Performance Centre is listed as 400, and fans have been able to attend Under-23 and Bristol City Women's matches in Failand.
