Bristol City take Southampton winger previously linked with Liverpool and Man United on trial

Bristol City have taken Southampton winger Ramello Mitchell on trial, with the teenager starting for the Under-23s against Swansea City on Monday night.

Mitchell is under contract at St Mary’s until the end of the season but this time of year is traditionally when the Premier League club make decisions on the long-term future of their prospects.

The 19-year-old, who has made 11 appearances for Saints' Under-23 side this season and made three appearances in the EFL Trophy, joined the club in 2019 from Birmingham City on an academy scholarship with a number of other Premier League sides also keen on the forward.

The Daily Mail reported at the time that Liverpool and Manchester United were monitoring the teenager, while Wolves also made an approach to sign him but Saints paid around £300,000 to take him to the south coast.

Upon agreeing terms, former director of football operations Ross Wilson, now of Rangers, said: “Ramello is a player with huge potential, and we are delighted to add him to our ranks."

Current City playmaker Alex Scott spent time in Southampton’s academy, from the age of eight until his release aged 12, eventually finding his way to Ashton Gate via Bournemouth and Guernsey FC.

A tricky winger who plays predominantly on the left, Ramello wore the No11 shirt and played 68 minutes for the U23s as they drew 2-2 with Swansea in south Wales.

Sam Bell, who was part of the travelling squad to Fulham on Saturday and warmed-up with the matchday 18 before the game at Craven Cottage, scored both goals for the young Robins, assisted by Josh Owers and Tommy Conway.

Meanwhile, City have loaned winger Owura Edwards to League Two Colchester United until the end of the season, four days after the 20-year-old had been recalled from his time at Exeter City.

Edwards, who made 17 appearances for the Grecians, could make his debut for the Us in their clash against Sutton United on Tuesday night.
