Bristol City star targets more silverware in superb season after England U20 World Cup call-up

Alex Scott's remarkable season continues to go from strength to strength after he was called up for England's Under-20 World Cup campaign this summer.

The 19-year-old midfielder was named in Ian Foster's 21-man squad for the tournament taking place in Argentina later this month. The Three Lions open their account against Tunisia on May 22, before facing Uruguay and Iraq six days later.

Scott was part of the England Under-19 side that lifted the European Championship almost 12 months ago, scoring in the semi-finals, and he is likely to play another key role having seemingly cemented his starting role in midfield. He is one of 16 players who were involved in last year's Euro success to be called up again.

The Championship Young Player of the Year started two of their last three friendlies during the previous international break, playing against France and Germany while coming off the bench against the USA.

Scott is one of two players who are contracted to a Championship club alongside Sheffield United striker Daniel Jebbison. Defender Callum Doyle has spent the season at Coventry on loan from Arsenal, likewise with Brooke Norton-Cuffy, while Middlesbrough's Aaron Ramsey is also on loan from Aston Villa. Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards is also the only League One player involved, while Liverpool's Jarell Quansah spent the second half of the season at Bristol Rovers.

The top two nations from each group progress into the round of 16 knockout stage, which takes place on Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1. If England progress, Scott will then play in the quarter-finals on the first weekend of June with the semi-finals on June 8.

England will be based in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires following previous confusion over where the tournament would be held. Indonesia were initially set to host the World Cup but were stripped of the privilege because of the political turmoil regarding Israel's participation.

Indonesia were due to welcome 24 countries across six cities, including Israel who were due to make their debut in the competition. However, Bali's governor, Wayan Koster, refused to host Israel due to their ongoing conflict with Palestine.

Scott has enjoyed another brilliant season, topping off his Championship Young Player award by being crowned Bristol City's Player and Young Player of the Season.

Coach Foster provided an insight into the style of football he has implemented with parallels to Nigel Pearson's City by playing with high intensity. Reported by FIFA, he said: “It's enjoyable to coach these players and to watch them – and I’ve no doubt it's enjoyable to play in these England teams.

“We want our players to be brave, to play at a high intensity, and we want to control games. We want to be exciting.

"You need to remember; we are in the entertainment business. People pay money to come and watch us perform. Ultimately, we want fans and supporters of English football to be excited when they watch our teams. There is an emphasis on that.”
