Bristol City player ratings vs Hull City: Vyner makes a statement as Sykes impresses in defeat

Dan Bentley - 7

Made an important stop to keep out Estupinan shortly after City took the lead. Little to do on the whole but had no chance with the penalty or with Hull's winner.

Zak Vyner - 7

Perhaps a surprise to see him in the starting XI but repaid the faith when his header back across goal was fired in from Weimann. Barely put a foot wrong while under the spotlight.

Kal Naismith - 6

Brilliant delivery that led to Weimann's opener after Scott had won the foul. Was excellent for 70 minutes until he conceded the penalty to bring Hull level when diving in to stop Estupinan's strike. Although very controversial decision.

Rob Atkinson (off 90, Klose)- 7

Consistent at the back, strong in the challenge with his feet and effective aerially especially defending set-pieces. Steps forward in the tackle brilliantly. Could and probably should have won a penalty.

Mark Sykes (off 60, Conway) - 8

Created two good chances in opening five minutes by getting crosses away, one in which Matty James almost scored. Full of energy down that right side with some skill to boot. Once or twice caught out of position but aside from that, faultless.

Jay Dasilva - 7

Not as involved as Sykes on the opposite side but didn't let a lot come down his side. A couple of wasteful crosses in good positions. Almost won it with an effort that flashed across goal.

Matty James - 7

Almost opened the account when his header was tipped wide past the post. Kept it simple in possession although sometimes overrun in midfield, especially in the second half.

Joe Williams - 8

Brilliant block to deny a strike from distance, throwing his body on the line. A typical Williams-like performance, gave his everything in midfield. Vital to keep him fit this season.

Alex Scott (off 60, Wilson) - 7

Perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty in the first half. Won the free-kick in typical fashion that led to the opener. Quiet in the opening stages but grew into the game. A number of mazy runs down the flanks before coming off on the hour mark.

Andi Weimann - 8

Who else to open the scoring? He kicks off where he left off, firing in from close range to open his account. Seemed to play all over the pitch at times, picking the ball up in all areas.

Chris Martin - 6

Won important fouls high up the field to alleviate pressure on his side. Not much in the way of goalmouth action but helped bring Scott into the game by dropping deep to pick up the ball. Struggled to make an impact in the second half.

Subs

Kane Wilson (on 60, Scott) - 7

A couple of dangerous forays forward, almost assisting Conway.

Tommy Conway (on 60, Sykes) - 7

Looked sharp on his introduction. Saw a dangerous cross smothered by the keeper and then lacked composure when blazing a strike over the crossbar.

Timm Klose (on 90, Atkinson) - N/A

Subs not used: O'Leary, Klose,
