Bristol City make third bid for talented League Two defender which could decide Dasilva's future

Bristol City have submitted a third bid for AFC Wimbledon’s Jack Currie, Bristol Live understands, with the League Two club holding out for a fee towards £1million for the talented left-back.

Currie has emerged as a late transfer window target for City after a breakout campaign for the Dons in which he has made 25 appearances under Johnnie Jackson and been a reliable defensive presence.

Wimbledon are in a position of a strength to a degree following the recent £1.2m sale of Ayoub Assal to Qatari club Al Wakrah, plus the £800,000 they earned from Jack Rudoni’s move to Huddersfield Town last summer, but ultimately every player has a price point.

Perhaps crucially Currie also still has 18 months to run on his contract at Plough Lane, including the option of an extra year, giving the Dons further security.

But City remain hopeful a deal can be struck for the 20-year-old, which is significant beyond his potential arrival at Ashton Gate as it would likely lead to the departure of Jay Dasilva. The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is one of the club’s highest earners.

Dasilva made his first start since November against West Brom on Saturday and while he was impressive, earning a cheerful embrace from manager Nigel Pearson, with Cam Pring now established as the club’s first-choice in the position, City are seeking value for money.

As talented as he is, it doesn’t make financial sense for the Robins to retain him on a high contract for another five months as a back-up to Pring, especially with interest across the Championship in the former Chelsea trainee.

A mooted switch to Coventry City would reunite him with his youth coach at Chelsea, Adi Viveash, and former teammate and friend Kasey Palmer, who has thrived under the management of Mark Robins.

Currie would be a more long-term project, but with Pring now emerging as a high-level Championship full-back, admittedly with the need to find greater consistency to his game, it would give the 20-year-old time to adapt.

A lot of City’s transfer policy over the last 18 months has been centred around signing some of the best talent in the EFL with Rob Atkinson (Oxford United), George Tanner (Carlisle United) and Kane Wilson (Forest Green Rovers) all arriving. City are also set to complete a deadline day deal for Wycombe Wanderers’ Anis Mehmeti.
