Bristol City goalkeeper signs new contract as he steps up to support Max O'Leary

Bristol City goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards has signed a new one-year contract at Ashton Gate. The Bath-born prospect's contract was due to expire this summer but the Robins have secured his services for at least another year.

With Dan Bentley leaving for Wolves in January and mid-season addition Nikita Haikin making a hasty return to Norway this week with the termination of his contract, there has been significant upheaval in the Robins' goalkeeping department this campaign.

Nigel Pearson promoted Max O'Leary to the number one role this term ahead of Bentley, and with Stefan Bajic out on loan in his native France, Wiles-Richards will be City's number two goalkeeper for the rest of this season.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his senior debut after signing for the club in 2019, but he has appeared on the bench several times in addition to playing regularly for the under-21s. He has had a taste of senior football in non-league loan stints at Hereford United and Gloucester City.

Wiles-Richards, who has recovered from a knee injury earlier in the season, had been City's third-choice keeper until Haikin returned to FK Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday, training regularly with first-team at the Robins High Performance Centre. Now, he has been promoted to number two in the pecking order with a realistic chance of first-team action before the end of the campaign.
