Alex Scott unsurprisingly received the highest average score for his performances over the 2022/23 season, as voted for by Bristol City fans.
Since the end of the campaign, Bristol Live has invited supporters to mark each of the 23 players who made at least five league starts or more than 10 appearances, out of 10 and Scott scored an impressive 8.7.
The 19-year-old is on his way to Argentina to compete in the Under-20 World Cup with England after a stellar nine months in which he was named Championship Young Player of the Year and City’s own Player of the Year, as voted for by supporters.
Scott was followed in the scoring by Cam Pring, as recognition of the defender’s increased consistency in a season in which he initially found himself out of the starting XI and squad, but fought back into the set-up under Nigel Pearson to make that left-sided slot his own.
The top four places are all taken by Robins academy graduates with Pring’s 8.3 followed by striker Tommy Conway and Players’ Player of the Year Zak Vyner on 7.9. Midfielder Matty James completes the top five by scoring 7.4.
The presence of so many academy players - the top three candidates for the official Player of the Year were Scott, Pring and Vyner - outlines its importance to the club, both in providing talent to navigate what has been a challenging economic climate and the collapse of the transfer market, and also create optimism for the future.
At the other end of the scale, the bottom four are taken by players either no longer at the club or in the process of leaving when their contract expires. Timm Klose and Chris Martin’s deals were terminated in January after they became increasingly peripheral members of the squad, Han-Noah Massengo was loaned to Auxerre and will become a free agent next month while Dan Bentley was sold to Premier League Wolves.
